He has had a fashion business in New York since the late 1980s, the same decade that Michael Kors and Donna Karan started their namesake lines. From 1999 to 2018, he showed two collections each year, some on the schedule at New York Fashion Week. But Michael Brown, 66, and his brand, B Michael, are not household names. For most of his career, B Michael has focused on made-to-order pieces — some everyday items, and others for red carpets, galas or photo shoots. He describes his aesthetic as “modern day Audrey Hepburn.” Beyoncé, Halle Berry, Whitney Houston, Diahann Carroll, Lena Horne and the jazz singer Nancy Wilson have all worn B Michael clothes.

When "Julia" premiered in 1968, it was one of the first Black family sitcoms to air"Julia" actors Diahann Carroll as Julia Baker and Marc Copage as Corey Baker. Not only was it one of the first sitcoms starring a Black mother and son, but it was the first time the series plot centered a Black woman who was not in a subservient role. Diahann Carroll starred as Julia Baker, a widowed nurse and her young son Corey, living in a suburban neighborhood following the tragic death of her husband during the Vietnam War. While the show touched on issues facing African Americans during the time such as integration and racism, it primarily focused on suburban life, which drew criticism. Just before the show's airing, television critic Robert Lewis Shayon wrote in The Saturday Review that the show was "a far, far cry from the bitter realities of Negro life in the urban ghetto."

Wonya Lucas Is Making TV Love Stories for Everyone

Growing up in Atlanta, Wonya Lucas recalls that few people on television looked like her. This, she says, is why Diahann Carroll made such an impression in “Julia,” a pioneering sitcom that ran from 1968 to 1971. “You could see a fully dimensional Black woman who had power, not by title or position but just by the way she walked through life,” Ms. Lucas says. As president and CEO of Hallmark Media, a division of Hallmark Cards, Inc., Ms. Lucas, 61, sees value in letting more kinds of people see themselves on screen. “We don’t all look alike, we’re not all shaped alike, and it’s important that different people get their love story,” she explains.
CNN —In theory there’s only so much to be done with a celebrity biography, but when the subject is Sidney Poitier, that’s an unusually target-rich environment. “Sidney,” a documentary from director Reginald Hudlin produced by Oprah Winfrey, does the actor justice, providing context, depth and considerable warmth in chronicling his remarkable life and trailblazing career. “He was given big shoulders, but he had to carry a lot of weight,” says Denzel Washington. “Sidney” casts its own warming glow, in a way that sheds light not only Poitier’s path but also the decades in which he carved it out. “Sidney” premieres September 23 in select theaters and on Apple TV+.
